Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: Unit 15144 is a room fill in Space 340 that I have excavated for the past three or four days. I believe it represents a filling event in which the plastered and red-painted walls of a room or structure were thrown haphazardly away. The walls of the unit were quite difficult to define, and in most of the unit it appears that the upper walls of Space 340 may be sitting on the 20cm of room fill that I excavated, instead of a foundation of some sort, however it does seem strange that walls would be built on such an unstable foundation.

The character of the room fill that I excavated consists of a mixture of soil, red-painted plaster and mortar, with a few small potsherds and obsidian flakes and animal bones mixed in. The orientation of the chunks of plaster, visible from a profile I cut around the unit before exposing the walls, indicates that pieces were deposited with plaster facing upward, downward, and diagonally. This seems to indicate that the deposit was made quickly and not particularly carefully.
