Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: I’ve begun to work in space 447 as of today. Following the plaster outline visible in the plan, I was able to expose the northwest corner of buttress F.3319. While excavating the fill unit 15163 early in the day, I came across two large tiles, which I assumed would be associated with a late burial but ultimately were not. Soon after, with some assistance from JMR, we able to define a plaster line marking the eastern limit of wall F.5068. As our workmen and I continued remove the fill, we uncovered another plaster line defining the southern limit of the wall F.5067, along with two pottery clusters. Only the eastern edge of the space is unclear due to the limits of the trench extension. The plaster walls coming out thus far have been quite regular and easy to follow, making them relatively exception.

Tomorrow I will most likely be going down, continuing to remove fill and expose the newly defined and reaffirmed features. We will also likely be creating the first daily sketch plan of the trench for the season using the TPS in conjunction with AutoCAD. For me it will be an educational experience.
