Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: Finally after removing sixteen tons of clay (if we counted all our buckets correctly) up over three meters and out of the south shelter, we have reached the floors of Sp.370. Only the northern part of the building has been exposed with the southern part extending beyond the LOE. Even so the building is a long building and the extensive length of the eastern platform also reflects this. To the south of the platform, bench is just visible before the LOE but the building must have been significantly longer for the oven and hearth to fit. The main space dog-legs around to the west where it is cut by B.87. We have more or less finished now, will take photos and plan and then remove the infill of the crawl-hole and finish off in the northern storage space. The building was obviously long lived and there is extensive slumping of the eastern platform suggesting the presence of numerous burials. It will be a really interesting building to excavate the occupation sequence of and I am looking forward to that next year rather than shifting an endless quantity of infill and midden.
