Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: I am still working in pit F.3331, exposing the next layer 15195 and the human bone clusters (15199) from an adult - probably all from 15192 individual. Our workers removed the massive flat stone that was inside the pit fill. Human bones are popping up in the northern and eastern sections of this new layer - I have tried to keep the skull and small pieces that were in the previous layer 15179 - to possibly see if there is some association with the other bones coming up. So far, the material coming up have been disarticulated and scattered human remains, there are some sherds of byzantine pottery, and red byzantine tiles. There was some bright orange/red pigment striations in the northeastern corner of the layer, that I showed to JMR and was only noted as being present as she has seen this before and we've sampled it in previous units.

I also assisted LKH with a section drawing for part of the morning as well in the northeastern corner of the trench, it was slightly difficult given the size of the section - only being about 15 centimeters high - to note all the thin layers.

The pit that I am in now unfortunately after lunch is in the sun, which makes it difficult to see things in the pit and it is hotter. It is also very frustrating, since I cannot predict based on articulations where the bones will come up next - leading to me fracturing them with an excavation tool.
