Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: Today I continuted to work on unit 15349 with DLG in the northwest corner extension of the trench. It was difficult to get going on our area, as there were many people needing and using the 2 sieves that we had set up. I ended up moving to the southwest corner of the extension, where human remains had appeared as they did yesterday (18/7/2011) in the same spot but deeper. My initial thoughts yesterday when I had planned and lifted the human ribs and vertebrae where that the burial had shifted to a north/south orientation, as the unit to the south of where the bone cluster was had a few human cranial and cervical vertebrae fragments come up. This ended up not being the case, as today we could see where the individual's skull was from 15346 skeleton which was directly below where I had excavated all of the ribs and vertebrae. Thus far, the ribs are disoriented, yet some are in sequential order - this also applies to the vertebrae, which are mainly thoracic, that have been excavated with the ribs. The first sign of human remains was on 17/7/2011, where a "isolated" humerus was excavated and removed after searching for further remains in the area. This humerus was oriented with the distal end to the north, and the proximal end to the south. Now, I am on a third layer of remains, consisting of ribs, vertebral elements, and one innominate. I suspect that under this, there will be the rest of the thorax and hopefully a full skull. I am wondering where the lower limbs are, as thus far we have only recovered bits of the upper limbs. Nothing below the innominate has been seen yet, but maybe they will appear in deeper layers. The cranial and cervical bits from the south unit 15350 is a separate individual then, and may be associated with the human remains located in the upper top soil 15345.
