Excavation Diary Entry

Name: JMR

Date: 7/20/2011
Entry: DLG and PTW finished U.15349, which differs from the other topsoil layers on roughly the same level (15350, 15351) because it contains building materials such as dark grey brick, plaster, lime, burnt red brick and lumps of pale yellow clay. Most of these seem to be in secondary position, but two roughly rectangular patches of dark brick, partially with plaster on them, might be structures. As they were still not clearly visible after spraying the area with water, DLG will take the area down some more cm to be able to see structures.

DKK, EMM and CMB finished the very large U.15350, which is still not really exciting, but contains several large tiles and stones. After cleaning and a photos they started the next arbitrary layer in this area (15357).

JFB excavated and documented another "layer" of the skeleton in F.3340. The skeleton seems very disturbed, but is altogether roughly complete.

In the eastern part, the first archaeological contexts appeared. After JHB, RHB and HLS finished U.15352, the southern continuations of wall F.5058 and pit F.3331 became visible. Water and the section help a lot to identify contexts in this area. It turned out that the massive pit F.3331, which cut away parts of buttresses F.3301 and F.3302 and of wall F.2427 and most of the room fill in Sp.454 also cuts into wall F.5058 further south. This cut (15185) is very clearly visible because of colour differences (wall: dark grey, pit: reddish). In plan, F.3331 contains stones, and little pieces of red burnt mud, sherds and a dark spot with charcoal. The section showed that there is yet another pit in this area (15353/ 15354) which cut the upper part of wall F.2427 and seemingly also the eastermost part of pit F.3331. This second pits also contains sherds, stones and little pieces of red burnt mud.
The two pits cut F.2427 from east and west so that only a funny looking triangular piece of ist upper part remains. We were not able to identify clearly the limits between the two pits, that will be done through excavation. The excavators started to draw the situation and will then start to empty the pits.
