Entry: | The first week has gone by very quickly, and despite the hold up at the start because of the sandbags still in the trench, a lot of soil has been moved and much of the team have now restarted excavating the buildings. Today, I was initially attempting to find the western edge of the small pit (U. 15353/4). The northern side of the cut was relatively easily to define thanks to the wall found to the south of space 454. However, perhaps especially due to heavy disturbance from animal burrows, the cut became more complicated to the southern edge and we stopped excavating in the hope that by excavating F. 3331, we could more clearly define the edge to this pit as well. So I am now excavating F. 3331. The new pit is large and deep, which means I have been moving a lot of soil and it's pretty hard going. Currently, I have taken the middle (defined by the section south of sp. 454) down approx. 30cm (there seems to have been a large amount of pottery and tile) and will move out to the edges tomorrow. Hopefully the cut will be relatively undisturbed and easy to define. |
