Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: Last night I spent much of the evening in the human remains lab cleaning the skeleton that JFB removed the other day. It is really good experience, especially if I do go into osteology. I hope I am picking up some basics! This skeleton is quite interesting because of the abcess in the mouth and the fish bones found in the pelvis. RHB and I finished off the cleaning of the excavated skeleton earlier today.

At site, I continued to excavate my pit, U. 15355. The western edge is still unclear but I have continued to excavate down, taking out lots of soil. The most interesting find in my pit today (though post-interesting in terms of the Catahoyuk excavation) was a possible coin from the charcoal-lined area to the SE of the pit. It was heavily corroded. The rest of the finds were more pottery, bone and charcoal. At the moment, the lower section and the base of the pit is now very striped with black (charcoal), orange, white and yellow inclusions to the more southern edge. There are still late artefacts including Byzantine tile coming from it so I am still above Neolithic layers and the room fill of Sp. 454. There is a large amount of soil to move, but today I managed to move substantially more than yesterday since we had workers on the sieves. I do have a backlog of finds though which need sorting so I might have to start tomorrow by sortng today's finds.
