Excavation Diary Entry

Name: JMR

Date: 7/25/2011
Entry: Today DLG, while also doing a great job on the total station, finished his arbitrary layer of topsoil/disturbed soil U.15358 west of Sp.342 and 343. Tomorrow he will clean the planum to see in plan features that we can already see in the sections, including three pits cutting into the room fills of the two spaces, into wall F.2426 and the still undefined construction F.3311.

Furthermore, the massive topsoil layer U.15357 was also finished by CMB today, the planum is still awaiting thorough cleaning but a few contexts already became visible. This includes the southern part of wall F.2424, a seemingly large pit west of it and maybe cutting into it and a deposit of ashy soil showing up in the section as having rectangular outlines. This ashy deposit was north of and directly next to the burial F.3340, of which an arm bone was found during scratching in the area which apparently was deeper down than the other bones and therefore not found before.

HLS continued going down and finding the extents of the large pit F.3331 (U.15355), which showed some interesting inclusions today, including a heavily eroded coin and several layers of charcoal.

RHB exposed the cluster of flat lying sherds in Sp.345 (in room fill U.15174), documented it and took it out. The cluster spread over a small area in the northwestern part of the room, while the rest of the room contained smaller sherds, bones, clay lumps, charcoal spots and generally the usual West Mound room fill.

EMM continued excavating her room fill layer U.15362 and started documenting the planum which shows several sherds, stone artefact, clay balls and plaster fragments.

BOD continued clarifying the room fill layers in the centre of B.98 which really are very small and thin lenses of depositions with different inclusions probably representing several depositions events. The rectangular red and yellow patches that excited us yesterday she exposed as lumps; now they look like lumps of material accumulated in the room. All layers and lenses seem fairly flat, sometimes sloping.

XHB continued exposing his pale yellow floor U.15371 in Space 446, which apparently shows two layers and matches with the orange floor U.15341 excavated last year; U.15371 seems to run under U. 15341.

DKK started excavation in Sp.340 (U.15366), whose fill so far contains greyish fill with player fragments, but few finds.

JHB continued removing the step of fill in Sp.342 left from 2009 (U.15359), coming across a cluster of pot sherds with small red and green stones in between (U.15368) and large lumps of yellowish marl (?) with impressions of reed and other organic materials (U.15369) which we cannot identify securely.
