Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: A bit of clarity today in U 15361, space 450. Going down a few centimetres, I think I can now identify several thin layers and areas within the unit. The plaster patches in the W part of the unit are acquiring a more regular form. Their white plaster is overlaid by a thin layer of brown homogeneous soil. It's hard to compare, but they remind me of the mud brick structure I observed last year in front of buttress F.3326.

To the E of the patches, the room fill is much more mixed: plaster, lumps of clay, etc. Under the bits of plaster in the E (which are very disconnected and randomly distributed), an area of dispersed ashes and charcoal emerged in front of buttress F. 3326. In section, it was clear that there were two thin layers of ash, with about1cm of soil in between. Some bones and charcoal were found in the ashy deposits.

Strictly speaking U15361 is composed of several depositional events close in time stragigraphically: the 2 layers of ashes, the construction of the regular plaster patches, and all the mixed room fill. And although it would be impossible to excavate or even see them separately, it is a nice opportunity to observe how the small events build up the room fill.

One interesting find - while washing the pottery from this unit in the afternoon, I came across a stone bead, which had been mixed with the pottery.
