Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: Spent all day recording new phase in building. As well as regular phase photos and video we also worked with laser scanning team to create a 3D model of the building and a laser scan of the phase.

Phase defined by removal of large bin F.6050. Below this is a platform in NW corner (F3611). A feature on the internal wall could be a bin, a basin or a fire installation (F.3610). The fill of the feature consisted of mudbrick, plaster and pise like material, suggesting it may have had a super structure. Square shape looks like a hearth but location would be unusual. Feature is burnt, but not sure if this was in its use, or a result of final burning of Building 77.

'Rams head' installation F.3614 was excavated down to red plaster (19286). Sadly this installation fell at the end of the day and is now in many pieces. The installation appears to consist of horns and small amount of skull, covered in clay, and mounted on the wall with a wooden stake/peg. The installation was then repeatedly plastered along with north wall.

The installation was not constructed at the beginning of the buildings life, but during its use. It seals the red paint around niche F6067 below it. We have a good record of the installation, its stratigraphic location and a 3D model of the phase it is in. Hopefully it can be, at least partly, reconstructed. Certainly its manner of construction can be further clarified in the lab.
