Entry: | Today I finally managed to take my pit (U.15387/F.3331) to the level the other half was left at in a previous year. The cut is as yet unclear, particularly since the burial to the south seems to have cut the edge of the pit (and I do not want to undercut into the burial) and the edges to the east and west undercut walls and until these have been removed it is difficult to excavate these areas without collapse. JMR believes there has been less material from the southern half of the pit than was found in the northern half though the reason this should be the case is unclear. There was a fair amount of pottery, animal bone and human bone, with more human bone and larger sherds of pottery found nearer the base of the unit. It may be that the human bone belongs to the same individual that was found dispersed throughout the other half of the feature. The origin of the pit is also still unclear. The pit is late but is perhaps earlier than the burial to its south and contains a very mixed fill which does not indicate a clear use for any purpose. Having finished this unit, a new unit has been created for the entire base of the pit (U. 16928) and I will begin properly excavating this area tomorrow. |
