Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: After clearing up the sandbag rubbish, I continued excavating U15394 in space 462 (lying under space 343) in order to clarify the structures. So far I can see the outlines of the three buttresses appearing as dark rectangles of mud brick on the ground (F3337 in S, F3338 in E, F3339 in N). Their silhouettes are not sharp, but are definitely there. After spraying, the outline of the E wall also appeared to be undercut by 5-10cm. I am less certain about seeing some lines of mud brick in the SE corner of the space, because the room fill is very heterogeneous.

The room fill contains a lot of hard reddish mortar, especially concentrated around the outlines of buttresses and walls. There is also a round area of mortar lumps in the middle of the space. Following the outline of buttress F3337, I came across quite a lot of animal bones, especially vertebrae and ribs, very dispersed both sideways and in depth.

It is worth mentioning here that DLG has found the missing W wall of the space, truncated by a pit and grave. So we are slowly confirming our idea that sp 462 is quite similar to the other buildings: a square-ish space with 4 buttresses in the cardinal directions.
