Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: Went on with M#'s work in taking down bench 3334 in space 98. As the stratigraphic relationship of this bench with space 446 is not yet clear, we leave the part running W-E besides buttress 5052 in situ for now, creating a N section of the bench.

This is the first construction feature we take down under controlled circumstances ;-), so it is quite interesting work. The bricks 16925 only look grey when dry: as soon as freshly exposed or as soil in the bucket, they are plain brown. They contain mostly bone fragments, and of considerable size. JMR wants it to go to to flotation entirely for our construction variants project, so I had only three buckets from the surface dry sieved today: almost no tiny fragments. Lots of tiny charcoal pieces, so our "midden" hypothesis for the mudbricks seems to work. The mortar 16926 contains no finds, sometimes only comes in patches on top of the mudbricks.
