First day on site where really cracked on with the digging. Working with Jez in the midden area. Excavated a block of upstanding midden material (4102) along southern edge of the midden area left behind from previous season because a wall had been standing on it. Completely excavated this unit today - about 670 litres not including samples. Very satisfying to move this quantity of material. Even better once we get grown-up size tools. In addition to the normal samples took first cattle DNA sample of the season from this unit.
Removal of this unit revealed line of wall material ( approx. 0.10m wide ) running alongside the wall to the south, with a north facing plaster face. This appears to have pulled away from the wall to the south leaving a gap which has filled with loose material ( 4114 ). This loose material was also between the midden material ( 4102 ) and the wall further east. This wall material appears to have been added to the wall to the south as stiffening or repair? To the north of this in turn is a large block of wall material, which may be collapse or maybe another wall. At present it’s not possible to say for certain as there is midden material which is still stratigraphically overlying this possible wall.
Apart from that only unit I’ve excavated was ( 3984 ) in the midden which turned out to be a boring skim of nothing in particular.
Hope this is not to terse and technical - will try and make these entries groovy and hapnin’ for you..Entered By: Richard Turnbull
