Entry: | Today I started excavating U 16936. This unit is an arbitrary layer in the roomfill of space 449, created in order to have a look what happens under the wall plaster lens 15380 and roomfill unit 15370. I started to go down in an arbitrary layer of circa 7 cm in front of F 3324. But I noticed an interesting layer containing a sort of yellowish clay, appearing in the section of F 3324. I am very unsure whether this is just a lens of clay or maybe some kind of a surface, so I stopped digging in front of F 3324 and started going down in front of F 5057, what makes sense anyway because I`m a little higher up there than in the eastern part of the unit. But right in front of F 5057 are several ground stones located, also an antler and few clayballs can be found there. Especially when approaching space 450 and F 3326 the soil gets very firm, and it is hard to trowel it away or distinguish any differences. The centre of the unit is characterized by a crumbly lens of burned brownish soil, containing a lot of wallplaster sticking vertically in this fill. This part of the unit appears to quite similar to 15380, although it has its centre more in the western part of space 449, so it isn`t exactly in the same spot as U 15380. In the centre of the unit, in eastern direction of the highest concentration of wall plaster, came a rather big lump of yellowish clay out, that was in discussion of being a floor or surface. But unfortunately I couldn`t find any connection in the surrounding area, at the moment it seems to be just a rather big lump of clay. But I didn`t manage today to expose the whole space at the same level, there is still a big spot in front of F 3326 that has to be levelled. Sticking in this higher level (starting level of unit 16936) is a really nice antler. To summarize the status in space 449: In front of F 5057 are interesting finds accumulating, especially ground stone. The centre of the unit seems to be quite empty of “real” finds, and what kind of situation we are actually facing in front of F 3324, is still a mystery to me. |
