Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: Today the aim was to finish off the pit (F.3331) and expose (and hopefully understand) the plaster surface that has been found underneath. Unfortunately I wasn't able to do this. The floor (U.16933) is getting fairly complicated. It has numerous layers, some of which appear to be going in varied directions. Right at the end of the day we found that the surface starts going up the section to the western side of the pit. It is unclear what it is supposed to be going up since the wall is maybe 30cm beyond still. It's slow and frustrating excavating the surface because it is not clear where it's going but we managed to get most of the pit fill finally out - at least at the base. Maybe tomorrow, once I have cleared the pit, the area will make more sense and I will begin to get an understanding of what the pit was, and what the surface at the base is. One option proposed was an oven because on the north-eastern side there seems to be quite a clean cut, looking like the surface may go into a circular shape. This is also the case for a fair amount of the surface edge but in other areas it is much more uneven and extends quite far - as with the western edge. Again, hopefully finishing up tomorrow and cleaning the area will make things a little clearer.
