Continued removing ashy lenses/floors/trample in south-west of space 117. Finds included an articulated group of bones in a hollow ?cats paw 4137 X1, a group of clay ball fragments 4136 X1 and an obsidian cache (4138) lying in a hollow. (4138) consisted of 16 pieces [X1 to X16] and some smaller fragments. Its spatial location within the building and its early deposition in the lifespan of the building is reminiscent of (1460) from Building 1, is this simply coincidence or is it patterning? (4138) seems to be a more mixed assemblage than other caches which had more uniform contents. Today's finds re-inforce the pattern of clusters within hollows found yesterday - (4112), (4134), (4135). The items deposited are quite large in relation to the thickness of the surrounding layers and it is difficult to believe that they didn't leave a visible impression. Would people walking around have felt them if they stood on them? These clusters are very specific, they are composed of a single type of material and are not general 'rubbish sweepings'. They must be indicative of specific activities/events occurring in space 117. It would be interesting to see if there are similarities/differences between these specific depositional events and the material in the general layers around which are quite 'dirty' and contain a fair amount of artefacts.Entered By: Craig Cessford |
