Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: Today I managed to finally expose the majority of the plaster layer (U.16932) and took out the remaining room fill (U.16960) to the western side of the pit. It appears that this fill has perhaps remained undisturbed by F.3331, and it contained a large amount of pottery and bone. The plaster 'floor' or surface - it remains unclear as to what the feature is - is extremely bumpy and uneven with at least two or three layers, potentially with fill in between some of the them. Yesterday we discovered that the plaster started to continue up the side of the pit and further excavation today after removing the room fill (U.16960) has shown that there is an almost continuous layer of plaster - possibly originally painted red - from the base of space 454 up the wall with a bench-like feature at the lower section next to the buttress (F.3301). What the plaster surface is is still very unclear, and difficulty in keeping the plaster clean and fresh across the whole space makes it hard to look at the whole thing at once.
