Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: Today I went back out into the field after spending a few days in the heavy residue lab helping to label and weigh the material. As there are only a few days left of excavation I was assigned to help JFB with excavating the burial fill, U. 16956 of feature 3343 in order to get this completed before the end of the season. The fill was outlined very clearly with mudbrick (U. 16954) and we were both hoping to find an intact skeleton in the fill, which I was keen to help excavate. However quite soon after we started to excavate JFB noticed mud brick within the fill which seemed to correlate to the walls of the adjacent room and so rather than discovering a skeleton we actually uncovered the walls of the Chalcolithic building. Although disappointing in terms of excavating an intact skeleton this is much more significant for understanding the Chalcolithic architecture and hopefully it means we will be able to get a building number for the adjacent space now that the southern wall has been found. The burial was probably very disturbed by the pit F. 3331 excavated by HLS so, as the mud brick had already been documented by JFB, we then removed it to establish the extent of the burial cut into the walls below. This was then photographed both ina dry and wet state which meant that the walls could be much more clearly seen. Tomorrow we will plan to level off the surface to the level of the bottom of the burial cut to expose the walls more clearly and better understand the architecture of the building.
