Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: Today was the last full day of excavation and we had a long day in the field with most people excavating until 5 in order to get their units finished. As I had finished the main area where I have been excavating this season, space 345 (U.15174 and 16946), and have since then been helping in various areas mainly working on the burials with JFB and latterly in space 454 whilst HLS has been in the heavy residue lab, I did not have my own area of excavation today. Consequently I moved around the trench helping where I was needed and instructed so I couldn’t really get stuck in to excavating and had to keep stopping and starting, spending a lot of time sorting finds, writing labels and sieving. This was a bit of an odd end to the excavating season but nevertheless in a way I am glad that I did not have the stress of having to rush through and quickly reach a certain level in my unit and I'm glad I could be helpful! I also spent some time sorting through and bagging the finds today which have been washed already which I have not done before, so now I feel as if I have seen every stage of the excavation and finds sorting process. For example, from excavating the pottery to washing it, rebagging it, sorting it, labelling it and even trying to refit sherds and measure volumes of vessels using lentils and rice! It is good to have been able to follow this process all the way through and one of the great things about Catal that the labs allow you to do this.
