| Entry: | Having been helping out in the heavy residue lab for the last two days it was really great to be back on site, in my space and with the team again. Although it was interesting to see the work that goes into sorting the flotation material, labelling and seiving and weighing the material quickly becomes tedious, especially when doing it alone. And today was a really great day to come back. While I was off site, RHB took over my area, continuing to remove the remaining pit fill which I had left when we had thought there was a Byzantine burial (F.3343) cutting the southern edge of the pit (F.3331) (which as it turns out was just the base of a previously disturbed burial). She found the southern wall of the space and since this creates a fully walled area of two adjoining rooms (sp. 454 and 310/453), today the area was assigned a building number - B.106! So it was nice to rejoin my space today and coninue the excavation of U.16967 which RHB started yesterday. She, JMR and I worked on the unit all day, removing the rest of the fill, uncovering the wall plaster as much as possible, and attempting to reach the base of the space. Unfortunately we have not quite finished off the whole fill, perhaps because RHB left work on the space later in the day and, as we worked longer hours today and the workers went home at the usual time, I had to sieve the wheelbarrows of soil I was removing, which obviously makes things slower. However, we had further confirmation that the room fill of this space, if undisturbed, would have been incredible. Today there were numerous amazing finds, maybe 6 large bags of pottery, over 10 x-finds, a fair amount of what might be cow bone and at the end of the day we even found the remains of 4 clay balls, though only one was whole. It was a fantastic day to be back on site and I'm so glad I was able to work on finishing the space (454). It's just sod's law that the space would become really interesting just as we are finishing up for the season! |
