Entry: | The morning today was almost completely absorbed by total station working and sorting and labeling my finds. The sorting was not a terribly large quantity, but due to my working the total station, I was amazed how long it took to sort them. The total station went smoother today, however, but it was frustrating how much of my time was occupied by it and how little time I was able to actually spend digging. When I began digging my new unit, 15378, at the end of the day, I discovered an unexpected wall, much higher than we had supposed it would be and out of alignment with the wall of the neighboring space, 343. I am very excited to expose this wall tomorrow and to investigate how it relates to the know walls near it. We are becoming frustrated with the pottery washing in the afternoons as it takes away from time that could be spent working with specialists in their labs. It has been awhile since I’ve looked at ceramics. They say they that they will hire workers to help us with the washing starting August 1, but that only allows us to spend two weeks working consistently with the specialists. Tonight JHB noticed an inconsistency with his total station points from yesterday afternoon, before lunch and today’s points. Closer examination of the points from the two days revealed that sometime during the day yesterday, the total station went out of alignment. The problem was fixed when I re-setup the station after lunch, and the points from today seemed ok. The ground that the tripod is set up on is incredibly soft and shifting and I should be sure to recheck the backsight often. From now on, I will re-setup the machine from the beginning to ensure that this doesn’t happen again. I am frustrated by the fact that it was screwed up yesterday. I knew I had initially forgotten to backsight the machine after lunch, but had assumed that the machine was stable during the morning. Given the quality of the soil and the fact that it is in a high traffic area, I should not have made that assumption and will be more suspicious than trusting of the machine in the future. |
