Pete and I have been removing the post 1960’s infilling in Mellaart’s shrine 8 which is our building 7 space 164. The surrounding walls are coming up nicely and so far we seem to be managing just over one 0.2m spit a day. This also employs between 2 and 4 workmen who are not happy at being forced to work constantly. At lunchtime today it appeared to be approaching boiling point but in the afternoon things calmed down a bit. We still have a lot of infill to remove from this space and the neighbouring one to the west and it will get progressively more difficult as we go down. It is crucial that we keep up a reasonable pace as we can’t afford to spend too much time on this.

As part of this process I have been removing wall F429, the eastern wall of the phase VII shrine 8. It is cut by an interesting small plaster lined niche F.426. As far as I can tell this must pre-date and directly underlie the later vulture paintings and cut out black bull which Mellaart excavated. Nothing in the niche which was deliberately filled, given the later art on this wall did it originally hold some important object?Entered By: Craig Cessford
