Entry: | Today we have been exploring occupational horizon of greasy silt, silty-clay [19394]. Simultaneously we have been uncovering upper part of a layer comprised mainly of laminated sequence of phytolits 19393. According to specialist, the phytoliths represent mostly fragments of husks. It is still unclear why there is so thick layer of laminated fragments of the plants. In my opinion space 470 might have had analogy to Building 2 (Space 117) from level IX and its last phase (B2.6.a). Let us put a citation in the spot: “At the end of its occupation Building 2 was abandoned. It was then used as a short-lived penning area, and then infilled by fairly rapid 'dumps' of midden (…)” in “Excavating Catalhoyuk”; Chapter 6:166. “Deposits of this phase are associated with penning-area activities. These took the form of an irregular organic•rich, orange•yellow spreadtraced virhlally across the entire space, including many of the last occupation deposits” There are also other similarities for example number of clay balls: “Was the number of clay balls found at this closure phase and the number of ovens throughout the occupation of the building 2 significant in representing a specialized food preparation building? (…)”
There were others penning sequences also evidenced at the site e.g. Spaces 198 and 199 of Levels XI and XII “excavating Catalhoyuk chaprer 6: 170. If the hypothesis is correct we can expect “amorphous yellow organic material” or stains below the unit 19393 that might suggest traces of urine. – we will see. |
