Continued removing backfill in space 164, I am still quite enjoying the physical exercise. Discovered that Mellaart left an ‘island’ of archaeology in the south-east corner which we will have to excavate once we have removed a few more spits. He has largely removed a substantial fire installation but has left some of it. This confirms what we had previously thought as shrine 8 only has an F.I. here in phase VIII and not in the later phases. It will be interesting trying to tie in to Mellaart’s work, I imagine it will be quite frustrating and time consuming and of limited value. On the southern side of the excavation he seems to have stopped under later walls and not gone to the edge of the building, this is interesting as on his plans he shows the whole building, this will need a bit of investigation to confirm for definite but it looks like he has played a bit fast and loose. The south edge also has what seems to be a nice set of 1960’s pick marks in it, a feature that also crops up in some of his photographs, its wonderful what you could get away with in the 1960’s.Entered By: Craig Cessford
