Yesterday morning , we completed excavation of wall F.299 at the southern limit of Space 115 , and moved on to later wall F.406 , which overlaps F.299 to the north and east , with wall repair (4224) to F.299 , stratigraphically lieing imbetween. Today we sampled brick and mortar from F.406 , but found it impossible to define which was which , the wall having been constructed in a rather haphazard fashion. We divided the two materials within the wall as type A - (4237) , a friable to compact , pale brown sandy silt , and type B - (4238) , a compact , mid. to dark brown clay. The general wall number is (4239). We drew an approx. 1.0m. north facing section , to give a representation of the construction. We stopped excavation toward the eastern limit of F.406 , so as not to disturb conservation of the cattle horn core lieing within midden (4121) , in the south-east corner of Space 115. Though far from certain , we tentatively came to the conclusion , that the sandy silt material , (type A), is the brick. This seems to be supported by the representation in our section - graphics no. 99/108. As further excavation of F.406 is going to be temporarily delayed by the conservation in Space 115 , tomorrow we will either excavate wall repair (4224) , or help Craig and Pete remove backfill from Space 164 , and/or Space 165.Entered By: Jez Taylor
