Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: Today we were planning to take down the southern wall of building 97, but as we were finishing the excavation of the make up layer in the southern dirty floor, unit 20331, we uncovered what appear to be two obsidian caches next to each other on the western side of the firespot. We eagerly began scraping away the pit fill to reveal several large chunks of obsidian in the northernmost pits, which the lithics specialists identified as raw materials that were partially prepared, but not fully complete tools. We separated these two pits into separate units, although the fill appears to be the same material. Because one of the pits contains much more obsidian than the other, we guessed that the obsidian must have been removed and relocated into the larger pit. A great many people appeared to be interested in the finds, and tomorrow we will remove them and do phytolith samples from the bottom of the chunks.
