Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: JFB, JHB, PTW and I continued removing fill 16976 to expose floor 16977. We have now uncovered it in the whole of Space 449, the eastern half of Space 450 and parts of Space 452. 16977 in Space 449 seems to be a layer of floor (no unit number yet) overlapping with floor made from another kind of material in Space 450. This is not certain yet, though. In the centre of 450 JHB came upon a cluster 16981 of sherds, a long bone tool and phytoliths that is not yet fully excavated. Parts of this cluster and fill 16976 run under the accumulation of plaster lumps 15373. This accumulation caused us much headaches last year, and we still have no real interpretation for it, as the lumps of white and red plaster (marl) lie to orderly to be debris but do not form an understandable installation. As 15373 is above the floor, however, it has to come out. We drew it and JFB started to remove it.

KTX and EUR continued in Space 341. As we still had trouble finding the interface between the two fill packages, they excavated a little sondage 16979 which not only produces sections that clearly show the wanted interface but already produces several small finds, including two stone artefact. These finds came from the lower part of the sondage and verify that we can expect many finds in the lower fill package (U.16980). EUR and KTX then started removing the fill layer 16973, which was separated from 16972 on top due to its compactness, and from 16980 below due to the great heterogeneity of 16980.
