Entry: | Unit 16973 was a thin layer of fill in space 341. It was more compact than the overlaying soil and it was differentiated from the bottom layer by a thin lens of soil mixed charcoal and marl. First we tested the stratigraphy with a sondage in the middle of the space (unit = 16979), where the charcoal layer was clearly visible. The quantity of clay balls, both, in the sondage and in the unit was overwhelming. Alltogether we collected around 25 clay balls. The quantity of the ceramics was also surprising. We collected numerous large and small ceramic sherds that exceeded the quantities of the much more voluminous previous level. This confirmed our initial choice for making this layer a separate unit. In addition, we uncovered many small bones (burned and unburned) and a small, dark green, polished stone axe. |
