| Entry: | EUR continued work in Space 341. IF came out to help with the cluster of unfired pottery 16989, which is a pile of large and small fragments in the NW corner of the room, very densely together, on top of each other. Their position suggests these fragments came into the room at the same time, probably representing refuse; therefore they were made their own unit. The cluster continues into what was thought to be wall F.2413/5055 and buttress F.5053/5054, just as some sherds of the room fill 16980, suggesting that we did not correctly identify the faces of these walls yet and they still have fill sticking to them – not surprising. EUR and IF put the unfired sherds into little boxes so they do not get crushed. EUR then continued with room fill 16980, which still contains many finds. EUR uncovers these artefacts, then takes a working shot, then removes them, goes deeper and finds more artefacts.
JHBs cluster U.16981 is getting ever crazier. He uncovered nearly all of it in Space 450 now. When seen from above now, it looks like somebody threw out a bucket of sherds with stones and bones, which probably is exactly what happened a few thousand years ago. The cluster continues into room Sp 341, so we want to keep the finds in place until we can see its entire extends.
PTW, KTX and I spent the day cleaning Buildings 106 and 107 and taking photos for a 3D-Model of them. A day of brushing is not really our favourite pass time, but I hope the models will reward us. Also, the workmen are working very hard in spite of Ramadan and now have taken out nearly all sandbags – the trench starts to look beautiful again.
KTX and I then started to remove the block of fill U.16990 left in the NW corners of B.107/Sp.462. We will not be overly careful with this fill as it is the same nearly empty fill we documented in 2008 and 2009; there might be a buttress in this block, though, so we will try not to hack through that. |
