Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: Life goes on and U20481 disappears in space 17/18. It is not all easy, as these two spaces have been open and run over by wheel barrows for a long time. The walls are fragile, U20481, the infill, is compact and full of well preserved bricks and the difference between bricky infill, bricky walls and infilly walls is sometimes small. A couple of the wall outlines have been redefined since we started excavating, but now we have moved some seventy centimeters down in the infill and are fairly sure about the shape of the building.

The temperature is still high, around 36-39 degrees in the middle of the shelter and constantly some six degrees higher in our north-east corner where the wind does not reach and the green house effect from the shelter roof close by is strong. Another phenomenon that has spiced up our existence in the north shelter the last couple of weeks is the lack of tools. They have not really been abundant before either, but now people seem to have focused and sped up and it becomes more and more apparent. Someone sneaks up behind you when you enter coordinates for your new x find and takes your spade. One four persons pod always only digs two separate layers at a time, because they only have two buckets. Nicolòs pick axe head came loose from the handle when he took a wall down and fell into the house three meters below, where the 3D modelling students were working. Our wheel barrow, our precious and one of three in the north, has a loose wheel and has to be parked so that it does not kill any civilians when it falls over. It slows down work, but adds a bit of a challenge and some daily excitement which I guess is good for your body and soul. Tomorrow we will get up extra early and aim for the small pick axe. Alea iacta est. . .
