Entry: Since getting out of the midden and taking down the wall ( 299 ) on the south side of space 115 I have been working with Jez in space 164, to start with carting zembils of spoil as the Mellaart backfill came out of this space, and then, once we had got down to a convenient level, drawing wall elevations .

We have drawn the walls on the east and north sides of this space but in the process we have gone slightly bonkers - mainly due to fact that drawing bricks and mortar would drive anyone nuts after a while and the fact that much of the time we were working in very hot sun, couldn’t see what we were doing etc. The morning sessions were best for this - and also we worked in the evenings a few times which was considerably more mellow - quiet, cool and you could see what you were doing. One day we did stay down for the afternoon session because it had got a bit much . Jez gave me some tablets to calm me down. I remember last year that the afternoon sessions were often very unproductive just because it was stupidly hot , often paperwork in the afternoon and site work in the evening would have been much better... but of course we ended up having to do site work in the afternoon and evenings ( & then do paperwork ) to satisfy productivity demands...
On the south side of space 164 we took some wall plaster off ( 4370 ) which lapped over the remnants of some floors ( 4371 ). These in turn were butting against a small area of wall plaster (4379) which has yet to be taken off - this may be the initial application of plaster in this building ( building 16 - this is probably level 8 according to Craig but not absolutely certain where this fits within Mellaart's phasing as yet.)

The only other digging we’ve done lately is to remove most of wall ( 406 ) - although only a bit at a time because we had to remove the wall plaster first, we had to wait for the horn core to be lifted and we could only dig this when no-one was working below. But finished this wall up to the line of the wall at the E. end of building 2 today - the remaining section of this wall is very eroded but hopefully we’ll be able to get rid of it soon. And now we’re in space 165 digging out more Mellaart backfill. Looking forward to the next couple of weeks - as we get the backfill out -and on down to the deep sounding ( and closer to the biscuit tin - this seasons holy grail ).Entered By: Richard Turnbull
