Entry: | Today was my first day back in the trench after missing 3 last week. Fortunately I was able to pick up where I left off with the digging, as no one had excavated my unit while I was gone. So after leveling and trimming the walls the bit that had been left, I restarted some serious digging. As I progressed through my 30 cm unit, the finds grew larger and richer, including lots of animal bones (with 4 horns, two of which were worked), and many large pottery sherds (including two complete profiles and one intact small storage jar). The volume and richness of the finds from as I progressed were very different from the corner in which I started (SE) and resembled closer the SW corner I had been digging the week before.
The digging went fairly easily and the soil came out in large chunks of mud brick rubble. It felt good to back out in the trench and my spirits were high, especially since I was doing big picking and able to get the blood flowing and the dirt flying again. My toe felt fine, and the only thing slowing me down was how fast they could empty my buckets. |
