Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: During excavation it became clear that what was thought in 1998 to be two dividing walls is in fact only one (F 403) with a lot of wall-shaped infill up against it, wall 402 does not exist. In taking down wall 403 it became clear that the southern part of wall 400 had been cut by wall 403. However, plaster on the as yet unexcavated southern end of wall 400 extends southwards into the undug fill under wall 403. Wall 400 thus continues southward under wall 403 at a lower level. Wall 403 is bonded at the western end to wall 405 so it looks as if the two walls were built at the same time. Wall 403 has also cut into the southern end of wall 401. There are however cuts in walls 403 and 405 which do not relate to the building of wall 403 but occur in parallel positions. Both walls step down towards the south.Entered By: Lucy Hawkes
