Entry: | In the beginning, we removed the so-called collapse material from the NE and NW spaces of BLDG 105 (unit # 18364 - both spaces around buttress 3365) . I was in charge of NE, while 'Ma Cheriie' (aka CMF) was delicately removing dirt from what seemed to be two pieces of construction material, with a cilindric edge and red colored plaster, all these found in the NW space of the building. In the bottom of the NE space, we noticed two latge dark grey bricks divided by a strip of mortar. We are not sure if the setting is a feature or not. We have to wait until we remove another layer. Meanwhile, CMF was able to remove almost intact the plastered material and other chunks of plaster in the NW space. She decided to include the fill underneath the chunks of plaster in a different unit. JMR decided to use unit 18356, which dealt with the overall fill in the entire building. In unit 18366 (the one with all the plaser in the fill) there were not so many finds and CMF collected all the soil (30 liters) for flotation. Then we both concentrated in unit 18356. Another bovine horn appeared in the SW area of the central space of the building. It looked like it had been worked on the top. The soil seemed slightly more reddish brown in color, with a concentration of ash in the NW. The workflow was not as usual; we had no workers and we had to screen all the soil by ourselves. In addition, we still continued to expose the walls, after each removed layer of fill. We were succesful in revealing all the walls in the buttresses 3365 and 3353 and 3366. Some other feature begin to appear in front of buttress 5052, which might be another buttress, according to JMR.
We also removed fill from unit 17289. Moreover JMR scraped the lower area of wall 3303 (in the SE), where a concentration of artifacts was found in a small hole (dimensions 20cm X 30cm). Stratigraphically, this belongs to unit 17259, therefore we decided to include the finds within this unit. |
