Entry: Today we (Johanna B. and Kyle) have cleaned building 96 for excavation to start. A small unit (u.20800) has been removed, which is interpreted as an infill layer in a pit. During season 2012 it was at first interpreted as a part of layer u.19715 (a possible burial or pit infill, according to the interpretation made 2012), but it was not excavated then, as it was considered to be outside the planned south section of the excavation area. I have understood it, though, as if the section shall be in a E-W crack between platforms, and if so, u.20800 should be excavated. I interpret it as an infill of a cut, different from the one which was 2012 excavated as u.19715. The newly defined cut, can be seen in the wall of the emptied pit. TBM=1009,79. The height of the instrument of the day is 0,44 above TBM = 1010,23
Laurie from the conservation team started to take away plaster to investigate some traces of red paint on the eastern wall. It seems to be a pointy pattern of some kind, not just a red lower surface of the wall.
The actual excavation work began very slowly in the course of the day, due to the lack of crib sheets, unit sheets and because we first needed to inform ourselves concerning how to proceed with sampling (choice of bags, labels, etc), the measuring of heights, and other practical proceedings. Slowly we seem to get the hang of how things are to be done here. A daily sketch photo was taken at the end of the day, after the removal of u.20800. It is, however, not yet scanned, as a scanner has not been installed.
