Entry: This season the work in Trench 1 (Mellaart’s Building 5- TPC Building 110) included removing the fills of two spaces belonging to this building- Space 485 located to the North and Space 486 located to the South. The infill layers recorded in both spaces were very heterogeneous typical building fills containing large amount of material. The infill of smaller, northern Space 485, apart of constructional elements and fragments of bricks and plaster contained also many burnt fragments of a very solid floor with pebbled make up layer. We were wondering if it is possible that Mellaart destroyed this floor while excavating this Building in the 1960s or rather it is Neolithic abandonment fill (we had a similar situation at the TP area, where a building’s infill also contained fragments of destroyed solid floor).
Infill of the larger, southern space of this Building (486) was recorded as a several separate units. The last two excavated units (30216 and 30221) were prioritized as they contained a huge amount of archaeological material, especially large fragments of animal bones (long bones, mandibles, scapulas, astragali etc.), fine black Neolithic pottery and baked clay objects. There was no late pottery in those infills what led us to believe that Mellaart has not touched this level during his excavations. The exploration of the infill continues and we don’t know about the depth of this infill as it is sitting between the walls of this Building, that still have not been totally exposed. We expect to find a floor of this Space and the plan for next days is to continue with the removing this infill.
