Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: We have finally completed our removal of building 120-- the building in the south half of our trench which was built into a huge terracing cut [30229]. It feels really great, we've made noticeable change in our trench and are beginning to dig into the material which is apparently Neolithic in date… Since it's the context in which we found our Neolithic burials last year (f.3931 and f.3961).

BUT of course, as soon as we start to clean the trench to get ready for this next, huge, step, we find a zillion more late pits. Maybe not a zillion. Six to be exact. And one is a pit within a pit! And you know what pits mean: three sheets to fill out (at least), for the cut, the fill, and the feature. PLUS the drawing of each individual context, which would be a lot less of a hassle if we hadn't removed all of our grid points in our urgent, efficient excavation of the previous late-period pits and buildings. It just never ends.

Hopefully tomorrow we'll finish excavating our last few pits (f. 7165, f.7166, and f.3986), and THEN, maybe then, we'll dig into some of that orange stuff that's been taunting us for the past two seasons.
