Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: Building 96, Space 370, is, despite its quite limited size, one with a lot of burials. These are, so far, situated mainly in the eastern platform. One adult individual/skeleton, was removed last week, and another one (also adult) was exposed, which is now being lifted by the human remains team, another cut – which will probably prove to be a burial, although it is very deep – has been half emptied and yet another one is on its way being excavated. In the bottom of the burial which was completed last week, two more crania are visible, preliminarily identified as one adult and one juvenile individual. And last season two burials were excavated; one in the northeastern and one in the eastern platform (baby and juvenile, respectively). By now, there is not much left of the actual eastern platform; it is all ‘just cuts’.

It is interesting with all these burials, but – of course – very time consuming to excavate, especially when the skeletons almost takes the form of powder or madeleine’s (? You know the cookies made of pure sugar and egg white…) and the soil is hard as baked clay. Today, when at the same time Ashley was working on stabilizing a cut in the western wall, Jason was shooting photos and Marek measuring points, our little building 96 was absolutely crowded with (living…) people, occupying all surfaces left to stand, sit on lay on!
