Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: Have been moved eastwards to the area which used to be space 159 as this has become unsafe due to cracking. Am removing infill of ?level VII to level VIII antechamber of ‘shrine 10’. Not terribly exciting and a bit of a distraction from building 18.

Since my last diary I have excavated another F.I, this was 477 which lay directly under 473. It had two bases (4543) and (4544) plus construction (4545) / [4546]. It looks like it was probably very similar to F.473. Also excavated the associated ashy rake-out / trample deposits (4539) and (4540) which go with this F.I. and the cleaner floors (4541) and makeup (4542) lying slightly to the north. Overall the pattern of these two phases are very similar. It looks like there may be an even earlier F.I. in the same location and of course there is still the untouched example in the south-west corner.

It really felt like I was on a roll and making good progress until I was moved. As with the building above I am convinced that the F.I.’s hold the key to phasing the building and that by excavating them quickly we stand the best chance of understanding them and by extension the overall building. This of course relies on me being able to provide some form of acceptable phasing which includes the south western oven despite it being stratigraphically isolated. Hopefully we will see when I get back to it.Entered By: Craig Cessford
