Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: I made a checklist—or rather, I should say that I made a MISTAKE, of making a checklist of goals to accomplish before the end of the season. The units I want to have completed, mostly, but also the 3D models to make and the plans to create. Immediately after making it, I went to check on the excavation of the room fill (u. 30844) proceeding neatly and unproblematically in the center of the trench.

Aaaand suddenly the room fill is going under the walls. (f. 3952, and f.7171) Not in a nice way, like a crawlhole or a niche… In a you-missed-something kind of way.

So then the next step is to plan and begin taking down walls. This is, of course, one of the last things you want to be doing with two, or three, or four days of excavation left.

We thought we understood these walls! We thought they were built like the other late Neolithic walls, like the ones Marek is turning up—mega-walls, constructed all together as part of some massive complex with large, distinct interior spaces. But now they’re not looking so contemporary after all. These two, at least, were apparently added later in time than f.7176, which is somehow related to the storeroom sp. 493.

The upshot of this is that my checklist has narrowed to one thing: understand what these walls are all about, so we can close the season with some sort of grasp on the stratigraphy in this trench!
