Today’s tasks were again the unsolved questions around the features 5074 and 2429. NMR was still working on the issues between unit 18351 and 17247. While I continued on lowering unit 17247 to find some hints about the wall structure to the north of feature 5074. Yesterday’s thought that feature 2429 is cut by a new wall in WE direction (with the same orientation like feature 2425) did not turn out right. After digging further to the west it looks like the brick structure from feature 2429 keeps the same direction as it does further to the west. Even though I revealed a vertical layer of mortar between the brick wall of unit 17247 and another brick layer, further to the north. Unfortunately the northern limit of the trench does not allow further digging in this direction to define the dimensions of this new layer of bricks. But still we can see a sequence of a wall and mortar layers (WE orientated). Either this wall is part of the mentioned second layer of unit 17247 or it is part of a new wall, what seems rather likely to me. One task for the next days will be the question why the two brick layers of unit 17247 are divided by a vertical layer of mortar. Is it the border of two walls or is it just connecting to different layers of bricks of the same wall? Another matter is still the function of the two walls from unit 18351 and 17247 and how they are connected. |
