Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: The three-feature section is done and as we feared, the plaster layers do not seem to continue. Although not perfectly even, the profiles F.2424/F.3303 F.3303/F.5063 and F.5063/F.2424 show the layers of mudbrick and mortar rather clearly. We might leave this exposed for a while in order to think about the possibilities that arise from the fact that all these features seem to be directly connected. JMRs hypothesis right now is, that F.3303 and F.2424 were in fact a lower wall and that the upper part is another wall which was built on top of them at a later time. This seems reasonable enough for me, but I think there might be other explanations. Our next step is to cut into another buttress inside building 105 in order to be able to compare the different sections and thus gain new insights into the stratigraphy of the building.
After work in the trench was finished, we had another trench tour with some visitors from the labs and everybody from the westmound team talked about their work. As we had our first full week behind us and already worked until 3 o'clock, everybody seemed quite tired, yet it was still very interesting to see what is going on in the other areas of the trench and what my colleagues make of it.
