Entry: | Once more, I've been sent to a different area of the trench. In the north-eastern part of building 98 there were different orange coloured layers to investigate. The first one was finished very fast, as it was only a small patch, I exposed the outlines and PTW took photos of the situation. The second one turned out to be much more interesting and therefore took much more time for me to work on. First of all, it was much bigger and even seemed to continue on into the buttress 3326, which was not the case. It was seperated from it by a thin plaster layer. But on the west side of the layer, there was a round installation made of firm but brittle bright material that resembled plaster material. As many people consider the orange soil to be burned clay, there was the suspicion, that the whole feature F.3391 might be a hearth or even a kiln. There were no indications for fire though, the material did not seem burned and there was almost no charcoal present. Maybe investigations on the orange soil will bring answers. Until then, we might not be able to resolve the question, as the excavation is almost finished and there is very little time left to do further research on the spot. |
