Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: A rather frustrating day as I had to dig a series of small units that meant lots of paperwork etc and relatively little soil being shifted. What appears to be the earliest F.I. in the space was numbered F.495 but only a small area of base (4562) survives. It was deliberately and systematically demolished then covered with a clen plaster floor (4560). This suggests that the move to F.I. 472 in the south-west represented a really serious change in the nature of the dynamics and spatial orhanisation of the southern part of the space at least. After that I went on to the limp in the south-east corner, F.496. It is quite peculiar and quite complex. I can’t decide if its a ‘bin’ or a ‘basin’, I’m inclined to think that the two categories may refer to two ends of a spectrum of possibilities rather than being distinct groups and F.496 lies somewhere in the middle. It has a plaster base (4565) with some form of organic residue (4564) lying over this. It seems to have had its opening facing eastwards and had a well formed plaster hood of which only a stub survives. When it went out of use more material (4563) was added and it remained an upstanding pedestal/plinth which was presumably used as a base for something. I am hopefully getting close to the base of the sequence in the south-east ‘island’ and should probably switch fairly soon to the south-west. As it is just me working in building 18 things are going quite slowly. This is a bit of a problem but does have its advantages as I probably have a better grasp of what is happening than if it had been dug by several people. Unfortunately this is a luxury that we normally have to forego in the interests of expediency.Entered By: Craig Cessford
