Entry: This week I have been working with Stella in spaces 39, 40, and 502. The space is a bit confusing, but it has provided an exiciting first excavation experience for me. In fact, the first unit I excavated was a child burial (F7329) we came across while cleaning on Saturday. This experience was thrilling on its own, but when compared to our work after te skeleton was lifted, it highlighted an even more exciting aspect of archaeology through the contrast. Since excavating the burial feature we have been focusing on excavating the infillin the spaces (which seems very deep). This has invovled many buckets and lots of sieving. I went from working with a skewer and air puffer to a pickaxe and shovel - all, ultimately, in an effor to understand the same space.

It does not look like we will have many features for some time, as the infill just seems to keep going. We aren't sure where a floor might be, or even if there will be one. The hope in excavating this area is that we will be able to understand its relationship to building 102 (to the north). But we aren't even completely sure it's a building. While at times it is frustrating to think that we might excavate more and more infill and never come to a floor (or more features) by the end of the season, I am simultaenously motivated by the fact that we'll never know until we excavate. And even if we don't find a floor, we will still have uncovered something about the space, and its role in relation to the buildings around it.
