Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: In building 97 we have so far - except from removing a couple of burials and a wall - mainly been working (hard!) on removing room infill. We are only working in Space 160, which is a number that has been allocated from a section of the outside of the northern wall of the building (in the Mellaart trench). Building 97 is thereby now out of phase since Space 160 belongs to an earlier phase, and also an earlier building. Therefore, from now on: goodbye building 97, hello building 130!

This is my first experience of entering a new building through a later one, and it has caused some problems when it comes to such as rethinking building, space and feature numbers. Space 160 had already been given this number when excavation of makeup/infill (20375) took place in 2013. Hence, I happily allocated all our initially excavated features to this space, without reflecting over the fact that they actually belonged to the spaces above (Sp. 365 and 469) since they were either cut from that level (the burials) or in other ways related to it (the wall). Corrections have been made.. There are still some questions to adress, however. For instance, the western wall of building 97, that seems to have been In use also in the earlier phase to which building 130 belongs. Will the relational database handle this? I've already had problems when trying to create relations between features that belong to different phases (i.e. when I tried to relate one of our burials to another in Sp. 365 while our burial was still allocated to Sp. 160). Well, time will tell. It's exciting, though, to be part of uncovering a new building for the first time, so I really hope all our hard work to get to it will be proved worth it!
