| Entry: | So, it has been sometime since I wrote a diary entry. It's mainly because that my dear collegues of B43 has been ill and I've been alone stressing over unfinished features and unit sheets. But today AJ came back and was able to finish niche 1856.
After excavating a small fill remain on the outside of B43 (to clear the upper strat of wall 1857) we could start taking down the walls for real. After lunch we shifted 35 buckets and the majority of the north and west wall has now been dismantled.
Another funny thing happened today. I finished entering data for the partition wall (F.1853) and it turned out that it was opened exactly 10 years ago, 21 july 2004, and now closed by me 21 july 2014. Isn't that weird? The multiple historical dimensions you feel while working in B43 is really something. I'm now been hacking away on the wall where the double lepoard relief once was.
Concerning the niche, we put high hopes on using the 3D-models to obtain plan, coordinates and levels for the different plaster layers. But since it requires several steps and different softwares to get the numbers it is clear to me now that it is always better to get the these data in the field manually. But it is also a question of logistics. If I had the software required on the tablet and connection with the servers then the simultaneous use of the 3D-models in photoscan and meshlab as well as ArcGis up on site would really speed up excavation process I believ.
I also want to connect back to "dig-scussion". This method totally disappears when you're alone in a building. Your own reasoning is often valid and correct but the validation of your train of thought requires more than one person. Archaeology is in Catal and should be a collective enterprise since the discussion while excavating is so important, even though your own initial thought was the same all along. Discavation is maybe a better sounding word? |
