Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: Spent most of the day working on wall F.467, when Jez planned the top it looked quite complicated and as usual at Catal this proved to be true. Post F.504 proved to be a secondary feature as did fill/packing (4660), both of these were sandwiched between wall plasters (4558) and (4661). It is impossible to be certain but I think that these modifications occurred just prior to the insertion of F.I. F.472 at the start of that phase and represent a major re-modelling of the wall.

I also just noticed that there is a bulge in the plaster on wall F.469 almost exactly opposite post F.504, presumably these played some role in delineating a north-south clean-dirty ritual-domestic etc division, unfortunately the deep sounding has largely removed the floor areas where this would show up.

Shahina wants the shoring up in building 18 as quickly as possible so I will have to crack on with the northern deposits now and abandon recording walls, hopefully someone can be spared to help and speed up the process. Once again I get shifted just when I am near to completing something, it can’t be helped but is frustrating and in the long term this leaving things half done slows us down.Entered By: Craig Cessford
